Negroni Sbagliato Spritz

Negroni Sbagliato spritz cocktail
I was planning on spacing out the cocktail recipes here with some other recipes, but I had a few baking stumbles and went through so much nut flour, butter, and eggs that I needed to take a baking break. And what better way to relax than over a refreshing spritz?
Negroni Sbagliato spritz cocktail
I was introduced to the Spritz when I went to coffee school in Trieste, Italy. I drank at least six cups of espresso every day – how could I not? – surprising even the Italian teachers. And by the end of the day, I needed to wind down.
So early evenings, I’d go to a local caffè where I noticed everyone drinking reddish drinks in large, wide goblets filled with handfuls of ice. Since icy beverages are often shunned in some countries in Europe, it was surprising to see people drinking cold drinks. And I wanted one.

Women Dominate the Beard Awards

CHICAGO — Female chefs triumphed in surprising numbers Monday night as this year’s James Beard Awards were handed out at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

Suzanne Goin, the chef behind the acclaimed Lucques and a fixture of the restaurant scene in Los Angeles for many years, won top honors as Outstanding Chef. Dahlia Narvaez, also based in Los Angeles, took home the prize for Outstanding Pastry Chef for her creative work at Osteria Mozza. And Daniela Soto-Innes, who oversees the day-to-day cooking at the Mexican chef Enrique Olvera’s New York City restaurant Cosme, was named Rising Star Chef.

Representatives of the James Beard Foundation said 2004 was the last year that all three of those awards had gone to women. But even more women shared in the evening’s bounty, a striking amount of recognition in what is still a male-dominated profession.
Joanne Chang of Flour Bakery & Cafe in Boston was named Outstanding Baker. Renee Erickson of the Seattle restaurants the Whale Wins and the Walrus and the Carpenter was named Best Chef in the Northwest.

Leah Chase, the 93-year-old grande dame of Dooky Chase’s Restaurant in New Orleans, received a standing ovation upon appearing on stage in a wheelchair to accept a Lifetime Achievement award.
“This gives me courage to keep going for about 10 or 12 more years,” she said.
Top prizes also showed a notable degree of geographical diversity. The Best New Restaurant medal went to Shaya, in New Orleans, while Alinea, the trailblazing temple to experimental cuisine in Chicago, captured the prestigious Outstanding Restaurant award.

Feel the heat with Julie Biuso

Feel the heat
I tried to cram as much eating (and the obligatory walking so I could eat even more!) into my whistle-stop visit to London the other week, but Ilaria and I loved eating at Dishoom so much – a modern-day Bombay Café – we went there twice. All well and good, and you'll see why here Dishoom dining.

Once back on Waiheke, I was hanging out for those flavours and started rattling through some of my favourite spicy dishes. Dal with cauliflower and carrot and coriander salad are great vegetarian dishes. Inexpensive, too. Just like Italian pasta, lentils and pulses go by many different names, but I've tried to give a heads-up on dal.

In curries, heat doesn't always come from chilli – ginger, especially when mixed with garlic and other pungent spices – has quite a kick. You probably know that ginger offers relief from morning sickness, travel sickness and rumbling stomachs, but did you know that it helps relieve inflammation, clears nasal congestion, wards off coughs and colds and helps lower cholesterol? Adding ginger to your cooking gives it a bit of punch along with a healthy boost, and if you team it up with garlic, you can cure  just about anything, baldness and pimples included. HaHa!
