A hundred or so lucky folk attended the launch of Al Brown's new book Thursday evening in Auckland.
The most handsome hardback, an honest, down-to-earth commentary about what it takes to make a restaurant great, was launched by Nigel Morrison, Skycity CEO, (and Al's landlord). It was a thoughtful speech to which Al responded in customary, friendly and generous style.
As one would expect the food supplied at the launch was superb, I especially enjoyed the tua tuas ,the paua fritters and the spare ribs! All accompanied by an excellent Chardonnay.
Nigel Morrison was introduced by Random House NZ's publisher Nicola Legat and it occurred to me later that this may have been Nicola's last book launch with Random House as she finishes there soon following the merger of Penguin Books and Random House.
She leaves after a spectacular career with Random House NZ a company which she turned into the most significant New Zealand book publisher.
She is too fine a publisher to be lost to the book trade and I hope that some other publisher snaps her up.
Thank you Nicola for all your splendid publishing, we salute you and wish you well for the future.
