You're On Dishes - an illustrated student cookbook

The talented University of Canterbury Fine Arts graduate Sarah Griffin has collaborated with the UCSA to publish You’re On Dishes, (rrp $10) a cookbook that utilises her great graphic design skills and ability to whittle down recipes into delicious simple to follow, illustrated steps.

Author/illustrator Sarah writes:

I initially created this book as a fourth-year design project. I decided from the outset that students don’t have to live like we’re stuck in a perpetual forty-hour famine that’s been ongoing since Year 11. With the UCSA sharing the same ideas about an affordable
student cookbook, “You’re on Dishes” was born.

There are plenty of means available, which, if students were aware of them, would result in delicious and cheap meals on the flat’s dinner table. I know this from experience – for the past four years, my own seven-woman flat has put together outstanding dinners, and all for only forking out $20 each per week. Our inspiration flows from many places – the trusted guidance of Mum, thousands of hours online, and the brilliant productions to be found on Food TV. Above all, we’re inspired by a willingness to innovate with new and exciting recipes, and the challenge of keeping the flat account happy.

Luckily, I’ve already run all the trials, so all you need to do is follow the recipes. They’re organised seasonally, because buying fruit and vegetables by season keeps costs down, and ensures you get the most from what’s available at the supermarket. But don’t be afraid to improvise a bit with the recipes, and put your own stamp on them.

Thanks must go to the University of Canterbury Students’ Association - in particular Steve Jukes, Emilie Hoffman, Liana Foster, and Anna Sturman - for helping to make this cookbook happen. Thanks also to my tutors Aaron Beehre and Luke Wood, my classmates for their guidance, and photographers Lauren Wafer-Kiddle, Elle Plank, and Emma McIntosh. Finally, thanks to my flatmates, Alice, Annabel, Kate, Kelsey, Hester, and Rebecca, without whom I could not have done this.

Short of having your Mum move in with you, these recipes will be the simplest and most effective improvements you can bring to your flat dinner table.

And, as a final suggestion, whoever cooks is on dishes.
Sarah.
